Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It’s important to note that PTSD doesn’t develop from everyday stressors, like work pressure or relationship challenges, though those experiences can still significantly affect mental health. PTSD arises when the brain and body struggle to process and recover from a life-altering, high-stress event. This may include serious threat to life, safety, or physical integrity.
Living with PTSD can feel like being trapped in a constant state of danger. Memories of the event may intrude into everyday life, leaving you feeling on edge, disconnected, or as if you’re reliving the trauma. These responses are not a sign of weakness but rather the brain’s attempt to protect you from perceived threats, even when the danger has passed.
At The Victorian Psychology Clinic we recognise that recovering from PTSD requires a tailored, evidence-based approach. In line with our values, we aim to work collaboratively with our clients, referrers and other professionals involved in our clients care including general practitioners, other allied health professionals and psychiatrists.
Signs and Symptoms of PTSD:
PTSD symptoms can vary, but they typically fall into four categories:
Intrusive Thoughts:
- Recurrent, distressing memories or nightmares about the trauma.
- Flashbacks that feel like the event is happening all over again.
Avoidance:
- Efforts to avoid reminders of the trauma, such as certain people, places or activities.
- Emotional numbness or withdrawal from others.
- Persistent feelings of guilt, guilt, shame or blame related to the trauma.
- Loss of interest in activities or difficult feeling positive emotions.
- Feeling constantly on edge, irritable or easily startled.
- Difficulty concentrating or sleeping.
These symptoms can have a profound impact on daily life, relationships, and overall wellbeing. PTSD may also occur alongside other conditions, such as depression, anxiety, or substance use issues, which can further add to the challenges.

Treatment for PTSD
Whilst living with PTSD can feel overwhelming, recovery is possible with the right support. Evidence-based treatments focus on helping individuals process the trauma, manage symptoms, and regain a sense of safety and control.
-
Trauma-Focused Therapies:
These therapies are designed to address the impact of trauma directly and include:
- Prolonged Exposure (PE): A structured approach that helps individuals confront and reduce the intensity of trauma memories.
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): identifying and challenging unhelpful beliefs about the trauma, such as self-blame.
- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR): A therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help reprocess traumatic memories. -
Symptom Management:
Alongside trauma-focused therapies, treatment may also include strategies to manage symptoms, such as relaxation techniques, mindfulness, or grounding exercises t o reduce hyperarousal and improve emotional regulation.
